What is it for?

An inductor is wire wound on a core. Current through it creates a magnetic field; when you try to change the current suddenly, the inductor resists.

It stores energy in switch-mode supplies (buck, boost), filters noise and forms resonant circuits. Toroid (ring) inductors keep the field inside and radiate little noise.

Things to watch out for

⚠ A multimeter only checks continuity (≈0 Ω); inductance needs an LCR meter.
⚠ When replacing, match both the inductance and the current rating (saturation current).
